Spiritual Sparks: Creativity: The Soul’s Outward Breath

A creative spark lives within us, waiting to be expressed

A creative spark lives within us, waiting to be expressed

A clergy member once struggled with a persistent problem. Despite repeated requests, people kept parking in his reserved space. He put up a sign: No Parking. It didn’t help. He tried again: No Parking, Please. Still, the space was taken. Appealing to higher authority, he posted: Thou Shalt Not Park Here. The command was clear, but the result was the same.

Finally, he tried something entirely different. His new sign read: Whoever parks here will be responsible for delivering this weekend’s sermon.

The space remained empty.

Nothing about the parking spot had changed. Only his creative response. Creativity is not reserved for artists or inventors. A creative spark lives within each of us, waiting for the moment we choose to see differently.

3 Ideas

  1. Creativity: The Radiance Within

Creativity is one of life’s deepest pleasures, engaging the soul. We were created to create, to bring something new into existence and give expression to what we carry inside.

Creativity brings certain images to mind: a painter before a blank canvas, a writer filling an empty page, an inventor transforming an idea into something real in the world.

But creativity also takes the form of a musician shaping sound, a dancer expressing movement, or a skier carving a path down a mountain. In each case, something inner finds its way into visible form.

  1. Creativity: Nurturing and Trusting the Light Within

Creativity emerges naturally. Every child builds, draws and explores without hesitation or fear. As we grow, we begin to measure our creations against others, and the joy of making gives way to the anxiety of being judged.

The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. Self-doubt acts as a silent saboteur, disrupting the natural flow of creativity.

But our capacity for creativity does not disappear. It waits patiently, ready to emerge when we nurture it and trust it once again.

  1. Creativity: The Pinnacle

The highest expression of creativity is found in crafting a human life. Parents bring children into existence and begin nurturing their character, values, and sense of purpose. Teachers and mentors help students become more than they were before.

Through our choices and our willingness to grow, we participate in fashioning the person we become. We are creators of our lives, not merely observers of them.

This may be the most important work we ever do. It is a lifelong act of bringing our inner potential into reality.

1 Question

Where in your life is your creativity waiting to be expressed?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Years ago, one of Ripley’s famous “Believe it or Not” cartoons pictured a plain bar of iron worth $5 and pointed out that if you forged the iron into horseshoes, it would then be worth $10.50. If you used the iron for making needles, it would then be worth $3,285. And if you turned the iron into watch springs, the value would soar to $250,000. There’s a big difference between $5 and $250,000. The difference is applied creativity.

The same is true within each of us.

A brief note: Bringing Spiritual Sparks into book form has been a deeply meaningful journey. What began as weekly reflections is now becoming something more lasting, a collection designed to be read, revisited, and shared. I look forward to telling you more soon.

Until next time,
May you bring your inner light into the world,
